Volunteer teaching in Sri Lanka
Voluntary work teaching in rural Sri Lanka

Having emerged from the shadow of political unrest, Sri Lanka continues to grow as a popular destination for volunteer travel.

While Sri Lanka is rich in natural beauty and culture, it is a country of severe social inequality, where poor infrastructure leaves many communities isolated.

Although literacy rates are relatively high in Sri Lanka, education and career opportunities are often limited in rural areas. Village schools struggle to provide a full education for local children and volunteer teaching can have a significant positive impact.

Overview

Overview

By teaching abroad with Inspire you can help under-funded schools and Buddhist community centres to improve education in impoverished rural areas. Our volunteer projects are based in the picturesque region around Kandy, where volunteers can work in pre-schools and upper schools, with children aged 4-8 and 8-17 years old.

While teaching in Sri Lanka your main role will be to raise levels of English among disadvantaged students. In pre-school classes volunteers teach basic English and play games to engage children and encourage them to learn. Those who teach in Sri Lanka in upper schools teach more advanced subjects such as French, German and Computing. Previous volunteers have also got involved with arts, crafts and music, as well as sports activities after school.

As a volunteer in Sri Lanka your skills, energy and imagination can help to motivate and inspire students and improve education in areas of genuine need. Teaching in Sri Lanka gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in Sri Lanka’s charming Buddhist lifestyle, making it an unforgettable volunteer travel experience.
