Volunteer teaching in Romania schools
Teach English abroad and change children’s lives

Romania’s membership to the European Union means it is often overlooked as a destination to volunteer abroad, but it’s a place where international volunteers can have a big impact.

Inspire works in a region of Romania where Hungarian is more commonly spoken than Romanian, but whatever the local language, learning English can make a big difference to people’s lives. Because of this English-speaking volunteers are in great demand.

Overview

Overview

This volunteer teaching project is based at a secondary school in the Transylvanian town of Szekelyudvarhely. The school is keen to receive volunteers who can help improve standards of English among its 400 students.

Participants on this Romania volunteer project work with children aged between 12 and 18 years old, using interactive learning activities to raise English levels, while acting as a role model to encourage good values and behaviour, both in and out of the classroom. The school has a strong musical tradition so volunteers teaching in Romania can get involved in music lessons if they have a special interest. The school is also keen for volunteers to run arts and crafts activities and sports sessions in the afternoons.

The children are always excited to see new faces and those who volunteer abroad on this teaching project can make a big difference to their lives, by motivating them to learn. As a teaching volunteer in Romania you can take your own classes or work as a teaching assistant depending on your experience and confidence, but you will be well supported at all times.

Location

Location

Country
Romania is an undiscovered gem of Europe, where rolling hills and mountains provide a stunning backdrop to a country with a unique charm. Romania’s beautiful natural landscapes and rich history make it an enchanting destination to teach English abroad.

Region
Our Romania volunteer projects are based in Harghita County in Transylvania. Those teaching in Romania will be based in a town called Szekelyudvarhely (known as Odorheiu Secuiesc in Romanian), which has a population of 40,000 people, 98% of which are Hungarian. The town is just one of many attractions in the scenic Transylvanian area.

Local attractions
Transylvania is best known as the setting for Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula and the region boasts some impressive gothic and medieval architecture. Harghita County is very mountainous and the Carpathian Mountains are a popular attraction for outdoor enthusiasts.

Getting there
Volunteers can fly into either Bucharest or Budapest and take the train to Sighisoara where you will be met at the train station. Alternatively, and at an additional cost of £50, volunteers can fly into the nearest airport which is Targu Mures where you will be met at the airport and transferred to the project location.
