India’s natural landscape reaches its most dramatic in the Bengali province of Darjeeling, where the Himalayas rise up to form the highest mountain range in the world.
This remote area is a picturesque setting for career break or gap year travel, but it is also a region lacking in institutional funding and educational resources. Local children living in traditional mountain communities do not have access to a full education and this limits their prospects for the future. International volunteers in India can help alleviate these problems by teaching English in under-funded community schools.
Overview
Overview
Volunteers teaching in India help to address some of the educational issues affecting marginalised communities. Our voluntary work in India’s Himalayan foothills places international volunteers in rural villages near Kalimpong and Darjeeling, where the need for their skills teaching English abroad is greatest.
Volunteer teaching helps to compensate for the lack of trained teachers in remote areas and you can help students to progress beyond a basic education. Teaching English abroad also provides children from poor backgrounds the chance to improve their spoken English, opening up countless opportunities for them.
Teaching in Himalayan villages can be part of a rewarding career break programme or gap year experience and your energy, enthusiasm and effort can give children greater confidence and inspire them to learn new skills. For the proactive international volunteers in India there are also opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities, such as sports clubs and community projects etc.
