Sandwiched between the imposing natural barriers of the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Chile is one of South America’s lesser visited countries, but one that offers a captivating gap year or career break experience.
However, like many Latin American countries, Chile is characterised by social inequality and rural communities are often marginalised by their geographical isolation.
In these areas educational resources are scarce and children are not given the opportunity to develop the skills that might allow them to better themselves. By teaching in Chile, volunteers can help to improve learning resources in disadvantaged communities.
Overview
Overview
Our voluntary work in Chile is based in the Elqui Valley, 450km north of Santiago. The area is characterised by tranquil village communities and picturesque scenery and volunteers work at small primary schools scattered along the valley.
As a volunteer in Chile your role will be to teach conversational English to local students. Depending on your skills and interests you can get also involved in sports activities and computing classes. This is a great opportunity to volunteer abroad and use your enthusiasm and creativity to improve education at schools with limited resources.
Teaching in Chile on your gap year or career break can be an incredibly rewarding experience and is a great way to gain an insight into Latin American culture, while improving your own Spanish. Through their exposure to native English speakers local children gain greater confidence and awareness of the wider world, opening the door to good jobs in the tourist industry.
