Tanzania is a fantastic destination for career breaks and home to some of Africa’s most iconic tourist attractions, including the continent’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro.
However, beyond the tourist brochures lies a country of desperate poverty, where education is often inaccessible or inadequate. Although the number of government secondary schools has increased dramatically over the past few years, this has stretched resources thin and there is a constant struggle to balance affordability with quality in education.
By teaching in Tanzania you can inspire underprivileged children to improve their confidence and prospects for a brighter future.
Overview
Overview
Inspire volunteers travelling to teach in Africa can help to meet the pressing need for teaching resources in government-run schools. Our volunteers use their skills and experience to work as teaching assistants or take their own classes, teaching English or more specialist subjects such as Science or Maths.
Volunteer teaching in a secondary school offers a different experience to working in primary schools, as lessons are structured around a more focussed curriculum. As a volunteer in Tanzania you can share your specialist subject knowledge with students as you help them work towards national exams.
Inspire volunteers wanting to teach English abroad can bring great value to a Tanzanian education system that forces secondary schools to teach in English, despite it being only a third language for many students. This continues to be a contentious issue, but by teaching in Tanzania you can help to make sure that no child is left behind.
Location
Location
Country
Tanzania is one of Africa’s most beautiful countries and is home to the continent’s highest mountain as well as some of its finest national parks and game reserves. With landscapes shifting from tropical beaches to sweeping savannahs, it is a fascinating destination for a career break.
Region
This volunteer work is available in and around Arusha, Moshi and the Pare Mountains in Northern Tanzania. Arusha is the safari capital of East Africa, where tourists, Maasai warriors, businessmen and local craftsmen mix amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. Sat at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi is a picturesque town situated in an area scattered with traditional farming communities. The Pare Mountains are characterised by rolling hillsides and lush tropical forest.
Local attractions
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and offers the ultimate trekking challenge for anyone volunteering in Tanzania. Northern Tanzania is also home to some of Africa’s finest game reserves and national parks, making a safari in Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti a ‘must-do’ activity. Those looking for relaxation can travel to the coast and soak up the sun in the tropical paradise of Zanzibar.
Getting there
Volunteers can fly into Kilimanjaro airport, but flights to Nairobi in Kenya are usually cheaper and more frequent. Those arriving in Kilimanjaro will be met at the airpot and transferred to their project location. Volunteers flying into Nairobi can take a bus service south to Arusha where the Inspire Volunteering office is based.
