Since its entry to the European Union in 2007, Romania’s international reputation and tourist industry have grown in tandem.
Its intriguing blend of rustic culture and medieval history has also made it an emerging destination for gap year and career break travel. However, widespread unemployment and chronic underdevelopment have limited much of the population to very low standards of living.
Child welfare is an area of particular concern, as hardship forces many parents to abandon their children and hand them over to an already over-stretched social care system. In these circumstances community volunteer work can make a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged youths.
Overview
Overview
We work with a community development organisation in the picturesque region of Transylvania. As a volunteer in Romania, you can work in care homes that provide residential care, education and emotional support for orphaned and abandoned children and disadvantaged young adults.
Volunteers contribute by acting as mentors, teachers and friends to the children and helping to create a supportive environment at the care homes. There are also volunteer opportunities at local schools for those interested in teaching in Romania.
This community volunteer programme gives gap year and career break travellers the opportunity to volunteer in a country typically neglected by volunteer organisations. Romanian children really benefit from their interaction with international volunteers and this project is ideal for anyone with experience of or an interest in social work, childcare or teaching.
