Paid Teaching in China
Discover Asian culture teaching in China

From the smog and skyscrapers of modern Shanghai to the tranquil panoramas of monastic Tibet, China is characterised by contrast.

This contrast is often reflected in its education system, where the quality of teaching can vary greatly between rural and urban areas. Qualified English teachers in particular are in great demand, creating opportunities for international teachers to earn money and gain unique work experience on paid teaching placements in China.

Overview

Overview

This project is an opportunity to teach English abroad in the spectacular surroundings of Yangshuo in Guangxi Province. Your programme begins with an intense 4 week TEFL training course and cultural induction. This gives you an introduction to Chinese culture and language and provides training to prepare you for teaching in China at a secondary school or training centre.

Those working in schools teach English to classes of various size (usually 30-60 children) following a structured curriculum. The schools have excellent facilities so you can get involved in various extra-curricular activities and sports.

Teaching English abroad in training centres is slightly different, as the classes are much smaller and you could be working with a range of ages, including children, teenagers, college students and adults. The training centres are busiest during the winter and summer breaks but those on paid teaching placements are likely to get paid more and starting and leaving dates will be more flexible. The average salary for international teachers is 400-700 Euros per month and you can expect to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.

This project is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience of teaching English abroad while living and working in China and learning more about its fascinating culture. Even if you haven’t taught before, the TEFL course will allow you to meet fellow teachers and gain confidence in the classroom so you can make the most of your experience. Because you will be earning, this is a great opportunity to teach English abroad and expand children’s education overseas, for those who cannot afford to volunteer abroad.
