Community development in South Africa
Volunteer teaching, childcare and community work

Having hosted the first African World Cup, South Africa is a country in the international spotlight.

Its spectacular natural landscapes, wildlife and cultural diversity make it an alluring tourist destination, but a range of social and economic issues also create a genuine need for travellers to volunteer in South Africa.

While things have improved significantly since the end of apartheid, social inequality, unemployment and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS mean that many South Africans continue to struggle against hardship. This is particularly true in rural areas and as a volunteer abroad you can make a real difference to the lives of the underprivileged.

Overview

Overview

Our community volunteer work in South Africa is based in farming communities in the picturesque wineland region of the Western Cape. Within this cosmopolitan area volunteers will find a surprising juxtaposition of rich and poor and a genuine need for your support.

Your community development role can be extremely varied and there are opportunities to get involved with volunteer childcare, teaching and women’s empowerment within the same programme. Volunteers could be entertaining and supervising children, teaching English and computing, running sports activites or even counselling local women on health and familial issues.

As a volunteer in South Africa you can use a range of skills to help provide comprehensive livelihood support for families from farming communities. Whether interested in volunteer teaching, social work or welfare, this is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Afrikaan culture.
