Volunteer in Nepal medical clinic
Improve rural healthcare volunteering in Nepal

While most people’s first glimpse of Nepal is its cosmopolitan capital, Kathmandu, those who venture further afield will find a country dotted with remote communities, where infrastructure can be very basic.

While this rural lifestyle has its charms, it also poses challenges, and inadequate healthcare is just one issue that international volunteering can help to address.

Volunteer abroad on this medical project and you can help provide primary healthcare to some of the most remote regions of Nepal.

Overview

Overview

This project offers medical volunteer placements at a community healthcare clinic that works to relieve poverty, sickness and distress in remote Nepalese villages. Located in southern Nepal, this medical outreach programme was set up in 1996, at a time when there was just one doctor for every 21,000 people in the region. Nowadays its healthcare, education and livelihood programmes support over 50,000 people, creating a need for the help of international volunteering.

As a medical volunteer in Nepal you can help clinic staff as they treat over 8,000 patients each year and a further 5,000 through outreach camps in rural areas. The clinic provides a wide range of services, including primary healthcare, medical training, education, nutrition, sanitation and clean drinking water, so your volunteer abroad role can be incredibly varied. Those with medical experience can help with treatments and observations, taking blood pressure and helping with dressings. Volunteers more interested in community aspects of the project can teach at the clinic’s kindergarten, using fun activities to improve education.

This health volunteer project is ideal for anyone wanting to volunteer in Nepal and contribute to an organisation that makes a real difference to the lives of people living in isolated Nepalese communities. With opportunities to get involved in hands-on medical work, healthcare initiatives, teaching, training and community development, this international volunteer role can really be what you make of it!

Location

Location

Country
Historically Nepal has been a crossroads of culture and commerce and a dividing line between civilisations and religions. A gap year or career break in Nepal is an opportunity to discover the country’s diverse and charming peoples, as well as the spectacular Himalayan scenery that dominates its culture.

Region
This volunteer project is based in southern Nepal in Meghauli, which is located around 8 hours from Kathmandu, near the world-famous Chitwan National Park. The region boasts some stunning tropical scenery and is dotted with remote villages and towns that offer volunteers a fascinating insight into Nepalese culture.

Local attractions
The biggest attraction for any volunteer in Nepal has got to be the spectacular Himalayan mountain scenery, which is the perfect playground for adventure travel and trekking enthusiasts. Those volunteering in southern Nepal can see a different side to this diverse country and explore the tropical landscapes of Chitwan National Park on an elephant-back safari.

Getting there
Volunteers fly into Kathmandu, the country’s largest city and a travel hub for all international volunteers. Volunteers are met at the airport and given an induction of the city before taking a bus south to the medical clinic in Meghauli.
