Crocodile conservation in India
Wildlife conservation with endangered reptiles

The sheer size of India means that each region has its own micro-climate.

In the south-east of the subcontinent the climate is tropical and wet, meaning that not only is it an exotic location for a gap year or career break, but a perfect environment for crocodiles and other reptilian life. However, the expansion of human settlement and activities around Chennai have destroyed and encroached upon large areas of natural habitat.

As the numbers of Indian crocodiles has declined the need for ecosystem management has grown. As a conservation volunteer in India, you can work towards protecting crocodiles in this endangered region.

Overview

Overview

Inspire has volunteer opportunities in a crocodile centre on the Tamil Nadu coast near Chennai. The centre houses more than 2,500 crocodiles as well as numerous snakes and amphibians and has supplied animals and eggs for restocking and breeding programmes across India.

The organisation also runs educational and awareness programmes for local schools and as a conservation volunteer you can help the centre’s overstretched staff as they carry out important wildlife conservation work. You could be feeding the animals, contributing to research projects, supporting environmental awareness camps or even acting as a visitor guide.

This project is ideal for any gap year or career break volunteer interested in wildlife conservation and wanting to help protect endangered ecosystems. As a conservation volunteer you will get the chance to get up close and personal with rare and dangerous animals, making this one of our most exciting volunteer opportunities!
