Renovate Buddhist temples & schools in Sri Lanka
Hands-on volunteer work in rural Sri Lanka

Formally known as ‘Ceylon’, Sri Lanka’s tropical landscapes and spiritual culture are a lesser known treat for gap year and career break travellers.

While tourism promises much for Sri Lanka’s future, government funding is often sparse and unequally distributed, leaving rural communities with little support. In these circumstances temples and Buddhist schools easily become dilapidated and local communities do not have the resources and manpower to improve them.

Community volunteer work from overseas travellers can make an important contribution to improving facilities.

Overview

Overview

This community development project is based in villages in and around Kandy, where temples and Buddhist schools require urgent renovation. Volunteers work within rural communities to restore important community facilities and improve living standards in impoverished areas.

This volunteer abroad role gives you the opportunity to take a truly hands-on approach to volunteering in Sri Lanka. Roles can include cleaning and repainting temple buildings and school classrooms, repairing temple and school equipment, and assisting ongoing construction work.

This community volunteer work is ideal for anyone wanting to make a physical contribution to village life in Sri Lanka. Gap year and career break volunteers can immerse themselves in Buddhist culture and learn traditional methods of Sri Lankan wood carving, making it a truly unique volunteer experience.
