A career break or gap year in Tanzania gives you the opportunity to live and work in one of the most welcoming countries in Africa.
Unfortunately, Tanzania’s outward hospitality conceals a nation beset by development problems, where poverty, social strife and disease contrive to make child welfare a burning issue.
Many children are orphaned as their parents succumb to HIV/AIDS, but others are ‘social orphans’ abandoned or neglected simply because their families cannot afford to support them. As a volunteer in Tanzania you can work with heart-warming children in under-resourced nurseries and orphanages.
Overview
Overview
Your work as a nursery or orphanage volunteer can help provide invaluable community childcare for Tanzanian children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Voluntary work on this child welfare programme can be incredibly varied, with volunteers doing anything from teaching and entertaining the children, to providing administrative support and delivering healthcare.
This child welfare programme is ideal for anyone with experience of working with children or wanting to experience teaching in Tanzania on a more intimate basis. This career break role gives you the chance to work closely with endearing and energetic children who thrive on the interaction you can provide.
Community childcare can be incredibly rewarding, but it is worth bearing in mind that working as an orphanage volunteer can be an emotionally challenging experience. Because we partner with a number of nurseries and orphanages in Tanzania, we can offer placements of varying hardship and difficulty, allowing you to match your skills and aspirations perfectly.
Location
Location
Country
Tanzania is one of Africa’s most beautiful countries and is home to the continent’s highest mountain as well as some of its finest national parks and game reserves. With landscapes shifting from tropical beaches to sweeping savannahs, it is a fascinating destination for a career break.
Region
This volunteer work is available in and around Arusha and Moshi in Northern Tanzania. Arusha is the safari capital of East Africa, where tourists, Maasai warriors, businessmen and local craftsmen mix amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. Sat at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi is a picturesque town situated in an area scattered with traditional farming communities.
Local attractions
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and offers the ultimate trekking challenge for anyone volunteering in Tanzania. Northern Tanzania is also home to some of Africa’s finest game reserves and national parks, making a safari in Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti a ‘must-do’ activity. Those looking for relaxation can travel to the coast and soak up the sun in the tropical paradise of Zanzibar.
Getting there
Volunteers can fly into Kilimanjaro airport, but flights to Nairobi in Kenya are usually cheaper and more frequent. Those arriving in Kilimanjaro will be met at the airport and transferred to their project location. Volunteers flying into Nairobi can take a bus service south to Arusha where the Inspire Volunteering office is based.
