With its democratic government and stable economy, Tanzania has a lot more potential for community development and growth than most African nations.
However, like most of its neighbours, it has been devastated by the spread of HIV/AIDS across the African continent. HIV is now the main cause of death in Tanzania and together with malaria, it has served to reduce life expectancy to just 48 years.
Women suffer from the disease itself as well as the social impact of losing husbands and fathers, who provide irreplaceable emotional and financial support. As a volunteer in Tanzania you can help women marginalised by HIV to build sustainable livelihoods.
Overview
Overview
Inspire volunteers can contribute to women empowerment programmes that are designed to help widows affected by HIV who struggle to support their families. This volunteer work aims to help women set up small businesses through the provision of charitable grants and continued mentoring and support.
This business development project is ideal for anyone with business experience or for those interested in gender issues in developing countries. Your volunteer abroad role allows you to get involved with every stage of the grant process, from identifying recipients to helping them establish their businesses and improving their performance thereafter.
Working closely with local entrepreneurs and nurturing their skills and confidence can be an incredibly rewarding experience, and you will see real progress as your projects develop. As a women empowerment volunteer in Tanzania you can use your business skills and experience to improve the prospects of marginalised individuals in underprivileged communities.
Location
Location
Country
Tanzania is one of Africa’s most beautiful countries and is home to the continent’s highest mountain as well as some of its finest national parks and game reserves. With landscapes shifting from tropical beaches to sweeping savannahs, it is a fascinating destination for a career break.
Region
This volunteer work is available in and around Arusha and Moshi in Northern Tanzania. Arusha is the safari capital of East Africa, where tourists, Maasai warriors, businessmen and local craftsmen mix amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life. Sat at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi is a picturesque town situated in an area scattered with traditional farming communities.
Local attractions
Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa and offers the ultimate trekking challenge for anyone volunteering in Tanzania. Northern Tanzania is also home to some of Africa’s finest game reserves and national parks, making a safari in Ngorongoro Crater or the Serengeti a ‘must-do’ activity. Those looking for relaxation can travel to the coast and soak up the sun in the tropical paradise of Zanzibar.
Getting there
Volunteers can fly into Kilimanjaro airport, but flights to Nairobi in Kenya are usually cheaper and more frequent. Those arriving in Kilimanjaro will be met at the airport and transferred to their project location. Volunteers flying into Nairobi can take a bus service south to Arusha where the Inspire Volunteering office is based.
