Quick facts

  • Population: 43.7 million
  • Capital: Dodoma
  • Official languages: Swahili, English
  • Currency: Tanzanian Shilling
  • Interesting fact: Home to Africa’s highest mountain

Tanzania is one of Africa’s most beautiful countries and is home to the continent’s highest mountain as well as some of its finest national parks and game reserves.

With landscapes shifting from tropical beaches to sweeping savannahs, it is a fascinating destination to volunteer abroad!

Development issues in Tanzania

Despite the influx of tourism to Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro and the Serengeti, Tanzania remains a very poor country where international volunteer projects can make a real difference. As a nation it is ranked 156th out of 174 countries in the UN’s human development index, which reflects a low standard of living for the vast majority of the population.

Reinforcing these problems are low levels of literacy and a prevalence of HIV/AIDS and malaria. The impact of these diseases means that life expectancy in Tanzania is just 48 years. Nonetheless, Tanzania’s stable economy and political landscape give it great potential for growth and those who volunteer in Tanzania can make a real impact.

Volunteering in Tanzania

Participants on our Africa volunteer projects can use their skills and experience to help underprivileged communities work towards brighter futures. Our volunteer teaching and childcare programmes target children with limited access to education and those orphaned by disease and social circumstances. Another important aspect of our Africa volunteering work is helping adults affected by HIV and supporting local NGOS and charities.

Teaching

Volunteer TeachingTeaching

Many Tanzanian schools are badly under-funded and illiteracy is a common obstacle to those seeking an escape from poverty. Through volunteer teaching you can help Maasai tribesmen and rural communities get the education they need to earn a good living.

Childcare

Poverty and HIV/AIDS leaves many Tanzanian children orphaned and abandoned and in need of support. Volunteer abroad in nurseries and orphanages and help entertain, educate, nurture and develop young children and orphans.

Business

Business and NGO development is a key means of improving standards of living in poor areas of Tanzania. As an international volunteer you can use your experience to help HIV sufferers build sustainable livelihoods, or support the work of local charities and NGOS.
