Make a difference volunteering in Gambia

Quick facts
- Population: 1.7 million
- Capital: Banjul
- Official languages: English
- Currency: Dalasi
- Interesting fact: Very narrow country that is less than 30 miles wide at widest point
The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa and one given unique shape by the Gambia River, which splits it into two and shapes its very borders.
Its tropical climate, rich vegetation and exotic beaches have allowed tourism to grow, but it is its uniquely African culture that makes it a fascinating destination for volunteer projects abroad.
Development issues in Gambia
Although the Gambia has come a long way in the last century, sub-Saharan Africa remains one of the least developed regions of the world. In 2009, Gambia was ranked 168th out of 182 countries in the UN Human Development Index, which reflects very low standards of living for the majority of the population.
Inadequate education and disease have been key causes of the Gambia’s poverty. A lack of resources and educational infrastructure mean that access to quality education is often limited, while the prevalence of HIV/AIDS has caused wide-ranging medical, social and economic issues. In these circumstances, Africa volunteer projects can have a significant impact.
Volunteer in Gambia
As a Gambia volunteer you can work with local NGOs, charities and schools to help address some of the country’s biggest development problems. Our Africa volunteering work focusses on developing skills in disadvantaged communities. In the Gambia, we have opportunities for volunteers to get involved in teaching English abroad and helping out at under-resourced rural schools. This is your chance to use your skills to help others in genuine need!
