Ecuador takes its name from the equator, which it straddles on the Pacific Coast of South America.
Despite being one of the continent’s smallest countries, its biodiversity and rich Spanish colonial heritage make it an intriguing setting to volunteer overseas.
Development issues in Ecuador
Compared to neighbouring Peru and Columbia, Ecuador’s modern history has been relatively peaceful. Yet by the end of the 20th century it faced wide-ranging problems. Inflation, foreign debt and natural disasters combined to create a precarious economic situation, which was made worse by continued political instability.
The consequence of this was severe cuts in social spending and a deterioration in the quality of health services and education. Between 1990 and 2001, poverty rates in mountainous and coastal regions rose a staggering 80%. By taking part in an Inspire volunteer programme you can help the country to recover!
