Development issues in Chile
Visitors arriving in Santiago are greeted with the modern cityscape of one of Latin America’s most impressive capitals. Chile’s economy has grown rapidly in the last 20 years but social inequality means that many have missed out on its benefits. Low government spending on education has resulted in a skills deficit that has left over 20% of people under the age of 24 unemployed.
Rural communities in particular have missed out on Chile’s growth and it is here that education resources are most lacking. Knowledge of English can open up valuable opportunities in Chile’s growing tourist industry, but a lack of qualified teachers means many do not get the chance to learn. Through volunteer teaching you can help to fix this problem!
Volunteering in Chile
Our Chile volunteer programs work with rural communities in the picturesque Elqui Valley, helping to brighten the future of children from poor farming backgrounds. Career break volunteers are based in specially selected primary schools, where they teach conversational English and run sports activities to stimulate local children. Volunteering abroad and teaching in Chile is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a charmingly rustic lifestyle and get a real South American experience while helping others.
