Young volunteers bring energy and enthusiasm

14th April 2011

Volunteering is for people from all walks of life and Canadian volunteer Ryan Jennings is a good example of the energy and enthusiasm that young volunteers can bring to organisations.

Jennings is in his early-20s and volunteers with the Canadian Red Cross in Frederichton. His easy-going attitude and sense of humour have helped him to stand out as one of the organisation’s most valuable volunteers.

Jennings mainly works in disaster relief and enjoys the organisational aspects of his role. “It’s knowing what we have available and what resources are available to us, and knowing where they are and when people need them”.

From a personal perspective, Jennings believes his volunteer work has helped him to become more confident and adaptable. “I’ve learned through experiences how to deal with situations, about myself and to have a better idea what I want to do,” said Jennings.

Jennings would encourage others to get involved with volunteer work if they can: “Volunteering is a good way to interact with different people in the community, helping out other people as well.”

Jennings has been marked out as one of the Canadian Red Cross’ most outstanding volunteers, and they hope his example will inspire other young volunteers to join.
