For some people the idea of working for free seems a little strange, so the thought of actually paying to volunteer is absurd. However, there are good reasons why so many people pay to volunteer abroad every year.
While there is always the option of going it alone, paying to volunteer through an organisation offers you the service and support that guarantees you make the most of your experience. Most importantly, it can give you piece of mind of knowing that if anything goes wrong, help is at hand.
Of course, some of the money you pay will go towards the running costs of the organisation you book with, but a lot will also go to the project and local community in which you volunteer. Indeed, many projects could not operate without volunteer payments and the support of international volunteer organisations. Sourcing, accommodating, managing and caring for volunteers costs money, without which many overseas NGOs and charities could not afford to obtain the manpower they desperately need.
Volunteering abroad offers a rewarding, once-in-a-lifetime experience that gives you a unique insight into other countries, cultures and communities. For many who volunteer as part of their round-the-world travel, volunteer work is the highlight of their trip, so it makes sense to pay and ensure it is a positive experience.
Unless you are a confident and experienced traveller with reliable contacts overseas, paying to volunteer through an organisation is the surest way for you to make a real difference.
