What makes a good volunteer?

What makes a good volunteer?

27th September 2010

While researching, applying for and planning a volunteer placement are all crucial elements of any volunteer experience, the most important part begins when you actually arrive at your project. So how should you conduct yourself?

First and foremost, as a volunteer abroad you should show commitment and dedication in your work. This will allow your host organisation to make best use of your skills and experience. While it is useful to have skills relevant to the type of volunteer work you are involved with, a willingness to work hard and learn is a worthy substitute.

A good volunteer will approach their working relationships with open-mindedness and consideration. Volunteers should be willing to introduce themselves and engage with others, while showing respect for those who may have different views and lifestyles to their own.

When volunteering abroad, patience can be a valuable asset. Volunteers should bear in mind that they are there to help and should act appropriately despite any frustrations they might face. Remember that in many cases you will not only be representing yourself, but also a charity or NGO that relies on goodwill to effect positive change.

At the end of their project, volunteers should ask themselves whether or not they’ve made a difference during their placement. The ultimate aim of volunteering is to help those less fortunate and those that achieve this find the experience to be much more rewarding and memorable.

Finally, volunteers should remember to have fun! Volunteering abroad is an opportunity to experience an unfamiliar culture and meet new people in exciting locations across the world. It certainly won’t be your usual 9-5 slog!
