In 2007, the New7Wonders campaign gathered more than 100 million votes from across the globe to declare the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The man-made wonders included Machu Picchu in Peru, the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Wall of China. Now campaigners are looking to vote in the New 7 Wonders of Nature, with the official declaration being made later this year.
Starting with over 440 candidates representing 220 countries, the natural wonders were stripped down to a shortlist of 77 and eventually to 28 finalists, who are now campaigning for support in the third and final phase of voting. Potential winners include Table Mountain in South Africa, Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Ayers Rock in Australia.
New7Wonders Founder and President Bernard Weber notes, “We are finding the New7Wonders of Nature campaign to be excitingly different from the first campaign. So many breathtakingly beautiful, natural places are still quite unknown to many. From waterfalls to fjords, rainforests to mountain peaks, freshwater lakes to volcanoes, we are discovering together the incredible beauty and variety of our planet.”
The final announcement will be made on 11th November 2011, by which time the campaign will have been determined by an estimated 1 billion votes.
