Volunteering ‘such a different way to travel’

19th May 2011

It’s all very well visiting a country as a tourist, but volunteering while you travel can add a whole new perspective to your trip, as a group of four Danish girls found when they volunteered in Nepal.

Danish volunteer Linn Krogh Skov volunteered in Nepal with three school friends and it was not long before they realised that it was a very different way to experience a new country.

Linn found volunteering to be ‘such a different way to travel… It’s not like just jumping on to a tourist bus, you actually get to see the ‘real’ Nepal”. The group of girls were not trained teachers but were able to make a big impact working in local schools: “Even if they don’t speak English well, we can teach them something, and they’re so excited! In Denmark you would never see students excited about school”, explains Linn.

Reflecting on their 4 week volunteer trip, the girls agreed that the best part of the experience was connecting with the students and local villagers. Linn’s travel companion Mathilde Nordenlund comments: “You connect with students and end up being a part of the whole village, they really want to know you”.
