Volunteering can make you happier
13th August 2010
Research commissioned by Make a Difference Day has uncovered the positive impact that volunteering can have on the lives of volunteers.
According to the study, more than half of the population feel happier when they help a neighbour or friend with a problem.
Complimenting this increased happiness is a perceived improvement in health and well-being. 47% of volunteers claim their volunteer work has helped them to improve their physical fitness, while 48% of long-term volunteers feel they have become less depressed through their volunteering experience. Two thirds of those surveyed also felt reduced levels of stress.
While the positive impact of volunteers is plain to see within the underprivileged communities that receive their support, this study highlights how it can be a mutually beneficial experience. With this in mind, there is no better time to volunteer abroad and make a difference.
