London, Beijing, Paris, Cape Town…some of the most popular travel destinations are the world’s iconic capital cities, but there are many undiscovered urban experiences to be found.
MSNBC’s Jennifer Chen has compiled a list of some of the world’s most underrated cities, which for one reason or another have stayed off the travel radar.
In some cases this is due to their close proximity to better-known cities, while in others it can be attributed to a bad reputation, which has long since been overcome. Whatever the reason, Chen argues that these cities deserve much more than a second look.
Taiwan’s Taipei is a classic example and has suffered at the hands of its obscurity and bad reputation as one of Asia’s most polluted metropolises. However, thanks to official efforts to cut car emissions, improve public transport and create more parks, Taipei has become one of the region’s most appealing cities. Indeed, neighbourhoods such as Xinyi and Da’an have become increasingly sophisticated, boasting refined restaurants and eclectic cafes and bars.
Other underrated gems include Glasgow, Detroit and Valparaíso in Chile. The beauty of these undiscovered cities is their authenticity. Unburdened by the pressure of tourism, these cities let you experience real local culture. As Chen says: “if undiscovered art scenes, experimental cuisine, great architecture, and interesting neighbourhoods are on your travel checklist, then these cities deserve a second look.”
