The results of a survey commissioned by Original Volunteers has suggested that women are more selfish than men.
According to the survey, women are more likely to bad-mouth their friends behind their backs and ignore charity workers at their front door. Men on the other hand are more likely to help out the elderly with heavy shopping bags and give change to the homeless.
The study questioned 2,000 men and women on their attitudes and behaviour towards selfless acts, with a surprising number of participants admitting to selfish behaviour.
Programme Director, Caroline Revell, commented: “It’s unfortunate to see a large portion of the nation considers themselves selfish. We’re all guilty of the occasional selfish act but this just goes to show how precious we’ve become over our own time. It appears that giving up your time is the ultimate sacrifice”.
Both sexes were guilty of failing to give up their time for volunteer work, with over 80% saying they had never taken part in or even considered volunteering abroad. Men were found to be more likely to volunteer at a sporting event but were far more reluctant when it came to helping out at fundraising events.
Survey participants cited hectic lifestyles, long working hours and apathy as reasons for their disinterest, with almost one in 10 saying they wouldn’t volunteer because “there’s nothing in it for me”.
