Research carried out by the Year Out Group has found that South Africa is the most popular destination for structured gap year placements overseas.
Richard Oliver, Chief Executive of Year Out Group, attributes this popularity to a number of factors, including the wide range of volunteer work available, South Africa’s perception as a safe destination and the value offered by favourable exchange rates. Tanzania and India also featured in the top 10.
The 50,000 placements covered in the research took place in over 90 countries across the globe, with 76% being booked by those aged between 17 and 24. Gap years in the 25-40 age range also saw growth, with many individuals taking a sabbatical or career break.
The survey also found a higher proportion of female to male participants, particularly in volunteer abroad programmes, where 67% of participants were female compared to just 33% males.
