Professor and dog nominated for volunteer award

7th April 2011

They say that dogs are a man’s best friend, but it’s not often that they’re nominated for volunteering awards!

But that’s exactly what has happened in the case of Wylie, the dog of English professor Debbie Hanson, who together with his owner, has been nominated for the 2011 Spirit of Volunteerism award.

For the past 9 years the pair have been volunteering at an elderly care home in South Dakota, much to the appreciation of its residents, as volunteer coordinator Marcia Brown testifies: “Debbie and Wylie are popular with staff, families and visitors”.

Debbie became interested in pet therapy while at college, when she saw firsthand the positive impact that animals had at a local health centre. “When we walked into the health centre with the dogs, we had an instant reaction”.

When Debbie got Wylie 11 year ago, she knew immediately that his outgoing nature would make him perfect for the job: “He is gregarious to the point of being ridiculous”.

According to Marcia Brown, Wylie’s visits bring care home residents a sense of joy and familiarity that brightens their day. For previous pet owners it reminds them of “the emotional bond an animal brings”, while others simply enjoy “the unconditional love that a pet can provide”.

Needless to say Wylie will be warmly welcomed at the care home for many years to come!
