Long-haul destinations offer better everyday value

20th April 2011

While those taking a gap year or career break might assume that it would be cheaper to travel in Europe, a Post Office survey comparing everyday costs suggests that long-haul destinations are often better value.

Although travelling to long-haul destinations will cost more up-front, Europe’s high cost of living and poor exchange rates means that day-to-day purchases made during your visit can really eat into your budget.

According to the latest Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer, the cheapest overall destinations were long-haul favourites Thailand, South Africa and Egypt. Comparing the total cost of 10 everyday holiday commodities, Thailand came in at well under half the average price for the same items in Europe.

Within Europe itself prices varied, with Spain being one of the cheapest countries to travel in. Everyday holiday commodities in Spain cost up to 15% less than they would in the most expensive European destinations of France, Portugal and Italy.

Helen Warburton, Post Office Head of Travel commented: “Holiday-makers planning trips further afield this year will get excellent value for money by travelling to long haul destinations.”
