Is volunteering the secret to a long, happy life?

11th February 2011

Well, probably not on its own, but 100-year old volunteer, Lou Kerker, is convinced that it helps.

Kerker continues to volunteer twice a week at his local Sheriff’s Department and even after all these years, he still believes that it is the spirit of volunteering that keeps him busy, healthy and fulfilled.

During his 100 years Kerker has seen a lot of things, including two World Wars, but he attributes his longevity to two simple things: staying busy and happy. ”Well, if I’m not busy I’ll get pretty nervous. I don’t like to sit around. I don’t like to just stare at a television and besides if you do, I don’t think you’ll last that long.”

Kerker also loves to travel and continues to take trips abroad every year, just as he and his wife of 68 years did before she passed away in 2003. ”I’ve been to Germany, Austria, Sweden, England, Spain, Italy, China, every year I try to go somewhere interesting,” said Kerker.

For anyone ever feeling like they’re not making the most of their life, Kerker truly is an inspiration! Read the full story here.
