Global tourism rising despite straitened times

5th April 2011

Statistics show that despite tough economic times, global tourism rose significantly in 2010 and is predicted to continue rising in the coming year.

Consulting group IPK International found that the global number of outbound trips rose by 7% in 2010 to 711 million, an all-time record high in terms of trips.

In 2011, IPK predicts that global tourism will rise a further 3-4%, with growth focussed in the emerging markets of Asia, Africa and Latin America. In more traditional markets, such as Europe and North America, growth will be much slower.

According to the Pacific Asia Travel Association, tourism will be particularly strong in the Asia Pacific region, with Southeast Asia and destinations such as Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam seeing growth of over 8%.

These trends show the growing popularity of less traditional travel destinations, as well as the growing spending power and marketing impact of emerging countries.
