Are Over-55s The New Gap Year Market

6th October 2011

The newly retired are now more likely to be gallivanting off on exotic “gap years” than students taking a year out before starting university or seeking their first job. According to new findings.

A recent survey, conducted by the post Office Travel Insurance, found that a quarter of over-55s were now planning to take a gap year within the next two years. This compares with just 19pc of students. The survey made that point that the tuition fee rise from next year will not allow students to take gap years, simply because of the cost.

In contrast, retirees that often withdraw a quarter of their pension fund as tax-free cash now have the resources to enjoy “the trip of a lifetime” which where not available when they were heading to university. Furthermore, these “grey gappers” typically spend far more than their student counterparts.

The Post Office, found that they will spend a total of £4,136 on their trip, the equivalent of £54.03 a day, compare this to the under-35s who spend an average of just £3,100

With the increase of over-55s taking a gap year there has been a rise in the amount of people choosing to volunteer abroad. The older and more mature group find the best way to spend a “gap year” and to make it worthwhile is to help and volunteer. Destinations such as Gambia, Tanzania, Ecuador and Romania are excellent options for adding that extra “make a difference” part of a year out.
