The association of gap year travel and the younger generation is becoming widely used. A high percentage of people travelling abroad are students looking for a break, however, an increasing amount of ‘grey gappers’ are set for overseas adventure well into retirement.
According to the Post Office Travel Insurance, around 19 per cent of students and young people are currently considering a gap year abroad or extended break on which to gain work experience or learn a new skill. This is due to the ever increasing competitive UK job market (have a read of yesterdays news article for more information).
Interestingly, among the UK’s over-55 population, the proportion seeking exotic ‘gap year’ travel is actually 25 per cent. Many attribute this to the lack of opportunities available to this group when they were students.
Included in the survey were the top five destinations that they would most like to visit. Including the US and Spain.
Sarah Munro, head of travel insurance at the Post Office, said: “Age shouldn’t be a barrier when it comes to experiencing different cultures and spreading your wings.”
Volunteering is an increasingly popular choice with this demographic, with experience and wisdom gained through working life shared with people less fortunate.
