Gap year travel – go it alone or travel with friends?

14th February 2011

There are a lot of things you need to think about before you embark on your gap year, but one of the most fundamental is whether you travel alone or with friends.

Who you travel with can have a huge impact on your enjoyment of your gap year, so it is important to think about the pros and cons of both options.

For many the decision is made for them, as none of their friends are available to travel at the same time. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing, and travelling alone does not mean you will be lonely.

Lone travellers are much more likely to meet new people, some of whom you are likely to attach yourself to and create new travel friendships. Lone travel offers a much more organic gap year experience, as you can pick and choose exactly where you want to go and who you go with, while avoiding the arguments and indecision that might come with pre-set travel friendships.

One option is to travel alone, but with structure. This could be provided through a coach tour group, employment or volunteer work and is a great option for lone travellers who want the guarantee of meeting like-minded people. Of these options volunteer work gives you the best chance of really getting to know the country you’re travelling in, as you live as part of the community rather than just travel through as a tourist.

Travelling with friends from home might seem the most appealing and easiest option, but it’s worth bearing in mind that gap year travel can really strain friendships. Remember that you’ll be living in each other’s pockets for weeks on end, so make sure that you travel with a friend who you know you can get on with.

Ultimately your enjoyment of your gap year will depend on your own character and the people you meet while on your travels. A gap year is a once in a lifetime experience so make the most of it!
