Different volunteer programmes offer very different experiences, which can be flavoured by the destination, type of volunteer work and even the character and attitude of the volunteer themselves.
Because of this, it can be difficult knowing which programme is right for you. The testimonials of other volunteers can prove a very useful tool in helping to give you an idea of what it really means to volunteer abroad.
Articlesbase.com has collated a range of volunteering testimonials which give a fantastic insight into the international volunteering experiences.
Sandra Rzeszutko, an American volunteer who visited Kenya, recollects her anxiety of adapting to a simpler lifestyle. “I must confess I had doubts about being able to cope, but within 24 hours I was totally comfortable… I was humbled by how few amenities they had yet they lived in contentment”
Jessica De Vos who travelled from Australia to volunteer with children in South Africa found her experience to be hugely satisfaction. “I enjoyed every minute of it. Meeting people from different cultures is one of the perks, fitting in with local life, spending time with a different family, learning about different societies, teaching and playing and loving the children… It was an excellent experience to open my mind and learn about different people and cultures.”
Kiwi volunteer Sarah looks back on her volunteer travel with fondness. “I still think of my Peru experience daily… My 8 weeks in Peru still proves to be one of the most powerful experiences of my life.”
Hearing the experiences of others can really shed light on the whole volunteering experience, so it’s worth asking for testimonials from previous volunteers with whichever volunteer organisation you choose.
