The Institute of Directors (IoD) has urged British employers to allow staff time off for volunteering, to help realise David Cameron’s vision of a ‘Big Society’.
This message comes after nearly two-thirds of UK employers admitted to not helping staff to volunteer, despite 58% of workers expressing a desire contribute to community volunteer projects.
Employers have shown reluctance due to a lack of time and money, but Iod director-general, Miles Templeman, believes staff volunteer work is an affordable way for businesses to do their bit.
“Employee volunteering is now a major part of the corporate responsibility mix, enabling companies to leverage their most valuable assets – their staff – to address some of the most significant problems facing society.”
