Not content with only volunteering in his local community, one American man is trying to take the spirit of giving a step further by volunteering in all 50 US states, plus Washington DC, Mexico and Canada!
Keith Donahue set out from San Diego, California in February this year, beginning an epic road trip, in which he plans to devote time to different non-profit and charitable causes across the country.
The idea behind Donahue’s ’50 Give’ campaign first came to him in the midst of a career break, when he decided to take time off work and get involved in volunteer work: “Then I thought, I’d like to travel, why not go around the country and work to increase volunteerism among twenty and thirty-somethings, while really putting some of these non-profits on the map”.
The trip took 5 months to plan, during which he worked multiple jobs to save up money and made arrangements to stay with family, friends and even strangers! The volunteer organisations he plans to work with are mainly small community based projects and reflect his interest in the environment, children and healthcare.
Donahue aims to finish his road-trip in Vancouver in mid-June, after which he will consider his future. Whatever comes next, he is certain that he will be able to draw on the experiences of his trip: “When you do something like this, you have to make decisions, there’s no time to procrastinate, you find out what you want…Your heart just opens up.”
